Fast away the old year passes ~ but we can't let it go without
wishing Drew a *VERY* Happy Birthday!!! Driveway Cam
hopes everyone has a happy and safe New Year's celebration and
that, of course, you enjoy the views on the very last day of 2007 ~
Sunday, December 30th, 2007 ~
A lot to view today if you get the chance....there are snow
storm warnings out west (and lots of snow to watch ~ try the
traffic cameras (Wyoming/Montana/Oregon), Old Faithful or the
various mountain cams and the air quality cams for some good
snow viewing); there are chicks hatching in the Antarctic; there
is fog and rain rolling around Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina
(check out the leaf peeping links or again the air quality cams); and
you can always catch the pandas napping in the National Zoo. Speaking
of naps, you may need a few to recover from all the excitement of
roaming the links!
Saturday, December 29th, 2007 ~
Welcome to the last Saturday of the year on driveway cam! If watching
the remaining snow melt gets to be too much for you, check out the
penguins. There be chicks!! (far right nest)
Enjoy the views ~
Friday, December 28th, 2007 ~
Here, on the last Friday of the year, driveway cam is hoping for
some Antarctic hatchings. If you see a chick please let us
know! Driveway Cam is beside itself in anticipation (which can lead
to some time-space continuum problems and we don't want that!)
(you can use the message board
if you don't want to send an email...) Happy Viewing ~
Thursday, December 27th, 2007 ~
If this isn't a perfect day for viewing (up, down, within and without) there may
not be one. The penguin chicks may be making their appearance on camera today (fingers
crossed) as there are rumors (and some pictures) of egg remnants! And today is the birthday of the astronomer
Johannes Kepler (who coined the word satellite, explained the moon's part in tides and was the
first person to design glasses for near and far sightedness) as well as
the birthday of
Louis Pasteur (whose germ theory gave us pasteurization and
vaccination). It is also the anniversary of the day
Charles Darwin left for his journey on the HMS Beagle where his observations
then bring us delightful discussions now about where we are on (or in) our family tree!
So enjoy the views wherever you end up looking today ~ and take notes!
with thanks to Writer's Almanac for the information and links
Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 ~
Happy Boxing Day to us all, while we all wait for the arrival
of the chicks down in Antarctica (where it looks to be a beautiful
day today). Kwanzaa begins today, and you might find yourself
wanting to turn up your FM radio while viewing as it is the 74th
anniversary of the patent for it being awarded (hate to pass up
any reason to party!) Enjoy the views ~
Tuesday, December 25th, 2007 ~
Driveway Cam wishes all of our viewers, and all of our viewees, a very Happy Christmas ~
Monday, December 24th, 2007 ~
Busy busy viewing today and tonight, both here and outside! We are on the brink of
penguin chicks hatching in Antarctica and the Moon and Mars are putting on quite a show
which you can read about clicking
right here and then be sure to also go out and take an actual look as the highest-riding
full moon until the year 2023 rises and Mars is the closest to us for the next 9 years!
And speaking of sky news.....NORAD tracks Santa Claus every year and you can
too by clicking on this link . Just
don't spend all night tracking him ~ he knows when you are sleeping and he knows when
you're awake! And best of all.....it's snowing!!!! Enjoy the views and the day ~
Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 ~
And then the rains came...........you can watch them run down
the driveway along with us! (until they change to lake effect later
tonight, hmmm maybe we'll have to extend viewing hours?)
Enjoy the views ~
Saturday, December 22nd, 2007 ~
Welcome to Winter! Today's very short day is brought to you by our favorite
23 degrees of tilt ~ the driveway should be hopping today. Hope you get some
time in all the rushing around to enjoy the views (on here or out there)
Friday, December 21st, 2007 ~
Last day of autumn! Rake some leaves, plant some bulbs, dry some gourds!! Or
come in out of the cold and enjoy some more Christmasy views, have some hot chocolate and
watch winter arrive.
And for you conspiracy theorists (and who isn't really?)
a little note from Writer's Almanac about crosswords,
which debuted back in 1913 on this date .
"London's puzzle in The Daily Telegraph for May 1944 is possibly the most famous crossword in history.
Just before D-Day, the puzzle ran with the highly classified operation code names Utah, Omaha, Overlord,
Mulberry, and Neptune as the answers to some of the clues. The incident was later investigated by England's
department of Military Intelligence and ruled as a coincidence."
A coincidence? Hmmmmmm :)
Thursday, December 20th, 2007 ~
We have (historically) a 56% chance at a white christmas round these parts. Our
last one was in 2003 I think. A little snow today but maybe not enough to carry
us through a rainy and warmer weekend? We're keeping all our fingers crossed. Penguins are doing well
and chicks are due soon! And if you are feeling shopped out and need a break ~ check out views from
down through Louisiana ~ it's the 204th anniversary of
the Louisiana Purchase
which doubled the size of the country and cost us only 15 million dollars (which
others have calculated is 3 cents an acre. (thanks to Writer's Almanac)) Take a
look at what we bought and enjoy the views ~
Wednesday, December 19th, 2007 ~
Sort of missed the Tuesday update, but at least driveway cam was keeping
an eye on things for you yesterday. Today, we were shocked to learn, is cousin
Andi's 40th birthday!!!! But how can that be?? How on earth is she getting
*so old* when the rest of us aren't? Happy Birthday Andi ~ and best wishes
for a wonderful year ahead. Hope everyone has a great day today in
Andi's honor, and of course that you all enjoy the views.....
Monday, December 17th, 2007 ~
Some where out there, under all that hair, Haydon is turning 15 today!!
Happy Birthday Haydon ~ we all hope it's a great year for you!!!!
Today is also the 104th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first
flight at Kitty Hawk, and the 115th anniversary of the first performance
of the Nutcracker. These brilliant moments are joined by the Edison Electric
Illuminating Company which opened shop 127 years ago today!
(you may want to check out the
world's longest burning light bulb by clicking
here or the link in the table below. Driveway Cam has been watching it for
3 of it's 106 years of illumination)
Sunday, December 16th, 2007 ~
Didn't get as much snow as predicted overnight sadly, trading in some of the flakes for
freezing rain and sleet. But more snow this afternoon when the nor'easter
arrives. Still could be some fun viewing locally, around the cams, and
at one of our
favorite nor'easter cams on the coast. Stay
Saturday, December 15th, 2007 ~
Today is the
216th birthday of the Bill of Rights ~ thank you George Mason.
And it is one of the big running around days for all of us - lots of trips
in and out of the everyone's driveway, and here as well. A few
flurries to watch before the Nor'easter blows into town (latest
guess is 24" of snow, we're hoping, but we're not optimistic we'll
get that) Whatever your weather, whether you watch from inside or out, enjoy
the views ~
Friday, December 14th, 2007 ~
Happy 18th Birthday Adam!!! Hope the year ahead is a wonderful
one for you. And today is the lull before the storm locally, which gives us time
to thank Max Planck who introduced his theory of quantum mechanics
to the world on this day back in 1900 making driveway cam's pet
Thursday, December 13th, 2007 ~
Driveway Cam is back, up and running to bring you all the driveway action
you can possibly use! And just in time for some snow we may be getting ~ Enjoy the view!
Sunday, December 9th, 2007 ~
The laptop is going to be traveling for a few days so no new driveway
pictures until it gets back. However all the other links are out there
and here again is the
Christmas Goat Web Cam from Sweden just in case you didn't get a chance to check it out yet!
Enjoy the views ~
Saturday, December 8th, 2007 ~
Good Morning Driveway Cam! Decorating continues around here
today, the tree is in and waiting to be adorned, and
the decorating elves will be arriving later ~ You'll want to check out this
Christmas Goat Web Cam in Sweden , it's the largest Straw Christmas
Goat in the world (!?!). It's a lovely view, but be warned, the goat seems to
call out to pyromaniacs as it has been burned down 22 times in it's 41 year history ....
Friday, December 7th, 2007 ~
Well even though driveway cam said it was Wednesday yesterday, it
really was Thursday, it really was the 6th which means that today
really is Friday! (clearly drivewaycam is ready for the weekend).
Enjoy the views ~
Thursday, December 6th, 2007 ~
!!!!!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTOPHER !!!!!!!!!!
And happy viewing on this lovely (at least up here, and at
least at the moment) day.
Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 ~
Snow's over. There will still be flurries for the
next few days ~ just no accumulation sadly. In the meantime,
the link to Santa's Site has been fixed, you have to click
on Inside or Outside Cam and remember that sometimes Santa
has to sleep even during this busy time! Enjoy the links and
these views taken just now (it's about 9:00 EST) of the sun
setting over the pyramids while rising somewhere over California ~
Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 ~
We had snow, it blew away. Rumor is there is supposed to be some
more today. Fingers crossed it will get here! Until then
there are all the other views waiting for you out there, you can
watch traffic which is almost as
much fun as being in it or visit a new page, in family pictures,
of the annual Rochester
Tuba Christmas Concert. Get some hot chocolate and enjoy
the views ~
Monday, December 3rd, 2007 ~
There is snow to watch today. Driveway is supposed to get plowed
every whenever 3 inches has fallen, in case you were wondering.
Moved the still-in-trial-mode message board
into the table below, where the Chickens
used to be ~ they've been out of sorts lately and we will return
the link when they get it working again. Have a good day and enjoy
the views ~
Sunday, December 2nd, 2007 ~
A most wonderful and Happy Birthday to Amy today!!!! Have a
wonderful day Amy, eat lots of cake and ice cream and enjoy! Best wishes
also to Hannah whose choir is singing the Messiah today and best
of luck to everyone out there for staying warm today!
Trying out a new feature ~ a message board where you
can post messages without having to send or leave your email address
(just for all the witness relocation viewers we have). Not sure how
it will all shake out but give it a whirl, you'll find it by clicking:
Saturday, December 1st, 2007 ~
Bunny, Bunny, Bunny! (Drivewaycam is nothing if not a traditionalist)
Welcome to joulukuusta* on the driveway...complete with snow! And rain,
and wind, and ice, and more snow all due in tonight and then snow
through the week. Should be great viewing. And in honor of December
the now closed Polar Bear cam is being replaced with
the link to our
favorite North Pole resident . Enjoy the views and stay warm ~
*rumor has it that's finnish for december
Friday, November 30th, 2007 ~
Today, in honor of Mark Twain and Jonathon Swift who share this date
as their birthday, we suggest watching the
diminutive race living in Antarctica (not quite Lilliputians perhaps but delightful
to watch) or keeping an eye out for
rafts on the Mississippi. Or
just watching any of the other links here that can whisk you away on some
viewing adventure (you never know, a meerkat may show up!). Enjoy the
Thursday, November 29th, 2007 ~
A very HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY to Cheryl today who doesn't look a day
over 49!!!!!! Welcome to the club Cheryl!!!! And a Happy Birthday to
Mary Q too!!! It's a double birthday bonus day here on driveway cam!
Enjoy the day and the views!
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 ~
The Polar Bear camera has been turned off for the season. Currently they are showing videos from
this year and we'll leave that link active until Saturday for those of you
who haven't had a chance yet to watch the bears.
And today is the 250th celebration of William Blake's birthday. The inventor, artist, poet once said:
"Great things are done when men and mountains meet" ~ if you don't have any mountains you can
meet outside your door, check out a few of them here that you can watch through your windows!
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 ~
Winter is supposed to come visit later today. Big winds,
rain and some snow is the rumor. Fingers crossed we may
get some white stuff on the ground later in the week ~
Monday, November 26th, 2007 ~
As soon as everything gets hooked together driveway cam will
be showing you the driveway once again. We all had a great trip
to KY ~ have updated the family picture page with pictures from
Thanksgiving, Cheryl's birthday do, Halloween and some before and
after pictures of the sidewalk. Don't look at them all too fast,
you'll get the bends! Today is Lewis Carroll's birthday and here is
a picture we took of the rabbit that may have inspired his rabbit in
Alice in Wonderland. It's
in St Mary's Church in Beverly, and the picture was taken during
Charlies 80th birthday trip to England.
Saturday, November 24th, 2007 ~
Today Driveway Cam is going to be nomadic-cam....from the
basement, from the kitchen, from the rooftops?????? Enjoy
the views as they unfold.
Friday, November 23rd, 2007 ~
The PC *AND* Driveway cam came to KY with us. Today's current
picture is a picture of DrivewayCam taking a picture of the
picture taken by drivewaycam...........yes, we are in a
holi-daze here and thought we'd share! Today is a trip to
visit Hannah's college, shopping (it is the day after thanksgiving
and certainly at least one cold turkey sandwich! More pictures
as possible. Enjoy the views!
Wednesday, November 21st, 2007 ~
The chestnut tree is still up at Anne Frank's house, missed the press
conference about it so I'm not sure how long the delay is. Getting ready
to head to KY for Thanksgiving this afternoon; not sure if Driveway Cam is
going with us or staying here to keep an eye on the snow that is due in. Guess
we'll all be surprised!
In either case, all of us on this side of the driveway hope all of you and
yours on that side of the driveway have a delicious and happy
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007 ~
The penguin cams are all up and running and things are busy down there
in Antarctica ~ the first egg was spotted just a couple of hours ago!
And in very sad cam news Anne Frank's chestnut tree will be cut down tomorrow
due to it's extensive disease. Here is a
link to information about the
felling and the link to the tree cam itself, for a last day of viewing, is
here or of course down in the table below.
Monday, November 19th, 2007 ~
The return of driveway cam! San Antonio was nice, other pictures will be
posted at some point, but it's good to be back in the land of sweaters
and coats! Today is the 144th anniversary of
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address
the text of which is on that link, and on this link you'll can see the newly identified
pictures of him at Gettysburg that day. And tonight, if you have clear
skies, be sure to get out and do some comet viewing
while you can! We now return you to your regularly scheduled driveway viewing ~
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 ~
The PC is going to San Antonio for a conference and will be back
on Sunday. Until then driveway cam is going to take a little rest
so please enjoy all the other links and views and new views of the
driveway will return on Monday.
Tuesday, November 13th, 2007 ~
If you find a treasure map today...follow it! Today is the birthday of
Robert Louis Stevenson and anything can happen.
The Turangi River link has been retired (see retired links link) and the
Meerkats have battled their way into that spot in the table. Also a new
link for some Rochester Traffic cams has been added to the traffic cams page
~ with one of the cams showing the Bay Bridge, the very bay referenced in
the Rafi song "Down By the Bay" (well, it could be). Click on the camera icon
and then on the picture itself. Enjoy!
Monday, November 12th, 2007 ~
61 years ago today the first drive-up bank window was established in
Chicago. While today's bank holiday may somewhat dampen the spirits
of the parades scheduled, it will certainly cut down on the wait time
The Meerkats are still in the 'trying to live up to drivewaycam action
standards' column, but are heavily favored.... See what
you think and as always, enjoy the views ~
Sunday, November 11th, 2007 ~
There is frost on the pumpkins this Veteran's Day! Our
first of the season. Yesterday's move went well (only
one or 2 trips left to make), the Yarn Sale and the salegate
party before it went well too (please note that champagne and
pumpkin bread are a great combination!), and finally there is
a new cam under consideration:
the Meerkat Cam at the Rochester
Zoo . See what you think ~
Saturday, November 10th, 2007 ~
Today is moving day for the divine Ms Em, it's Salegate
day in Spencerport, and it's Martin Luther's birthday. I'm
not sure all the celebrations will fit on the driveway
but we're going to try.
The Exploding Comet 17P/Holmes is still in the news, and
in view. Check out the
spaceweather.com link for more information and
enjoy ALL the views!
Thursday, November 8th, 2007 ~
The flakes were too scattered to show up on driveway cam
but we get get a few of them yesterday! Here's hoping for more.
Have a good Thursday and enjoy the views ~
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007 ~
Scattered Lake Effect is on for today. Have to see
if some scatters by the driveway. The iced-in contest
is underway at the Lake
in Maine link (click on the ice-in contest tab when
you get there), and there is still lots of good
to be had (the Georgia links are really pretty). A full day of
viewing ahead ~ let's be careful out there...
Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 ~
Vote Early Vote Often. It's our battle cry down at precinct
#19. If you're in the neighborhood stop by. Have to leave here
at 5 (AM!!! How did democracy get on such an early schedule? I don't
remember voting on that) so the first picture may be dark, or may
be missed if I don't manage to remember to start up the camera.
However - whatever the view get out and vote!
Monday, November 5th, 2007 ~
Happy Monday! The "S" word is in this week's forecast,
however should be some sunshine (the other s word) lurking
about this morning. It's a few updates, read condo, day but you
can still enjoy the views ~ and keep an eye on
the penguin cam(s), a couple more of them seem to be up and
working and hopefully will stay that way!!
Check your locale for
space station/shuttle viewing as they
are undocking today.
Sunday, November 4th, 2007 ~
Hope you set your clocks back last night or it's
an hour earlier than you think it is! The polar bear
cam is back for a couple of weeks and can be found
clicking here , or checking the link in the table
below (it has replaced the Mashatu Game Reserve Cam which
is done for the season). Live Viewing Times for the
polar bears: Oct. 24 - Nov. 18, 2007
9:00 AM-3:00 PM CDT 10:00 AM-4:00 PM EDT
Saturday, November 3rd, 2007 ~
It's a new day here at driveway cam, we're glad you
found us! ...the driveway is here, your favorite links are here
(almost all of them)(the rest will be here soon)
and we're hoping you'll enjoy the new digs and
of course the views ~
Wednesday, October 31th, 2007 ~
Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 ~
Happy AllHallowsEve Eve! Pumpkins will be carved tonight
in the house behind the driveway. They will magically
appear on the pumpkin page , as will your pumpkins if you
send in a picture of them. And now a word from Word a Day ~
Word of the Day: Jack-o'-lantern (noun)
Definition: A lantern made from a hollowed pumpkin or
other vegetable, with openings representing eyes, nose,
and mouth—a symbol of Halloween.
Monday, October 29th, 2007 ~
Halloween is just around the corner ~ and who knows what else
might be lurking there........Enjoy the views. And don't forget
to send in pictures of your jack-O-lanterns!
Sunday, October 28th, 2007 ~
It's candy buying and pumpkin carving day today, perhaps, here
at Driveway Cam International. Running out of time so if it isn't
today it needs to be soon! Send in pictures of your jack-o-lanterns
and we'll post them so everyone can see them on
The Pumpkin Page ~ and if you set your clocks back (like the PC did)
unset them at once! (unless you are a viewer in Canada). Enjoy the views
whatever time zone you're in today.
Saturday, October 27th, 2007 ~
Pumpkins need to be purchased today 'round these parts, and
temperatures are going to be falling like rain (as is the
rain). But that won't dampen our wishes for a VERY HAPPY
BIRTHDAY for Bob! Have a glass or two of your home brew and
enjoy the day. We all hope it's a great day for you and for
Ray-bees who is also celebrating his birthday today. And
to all our viewers ~ Enjoy the comings and goings and have a lovely last
Saturday of October!!! (it's scary how fast time flies isn't it?)
Friday, October 26th, 2007 ~
It's back to all driveway all the time ~ the work is finished in
the front, pictures posted soon. Get out to see the Holmes comet tonight
if conditions allow, it's very pretty and easy to find. It's the
large golden looking object in the North East sky. There is the large
full moon to watch and the shuttle/space station to look for.....lots
of looking up tonight! And of course don't forget to enjoy looking at the
views here down here today ~
Thursday, October 25th, 2007 ~
Amid all the things said of the James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868)
it is said that he was a natty dresser, and made sure that the brigade he took charge
of in 1854 was well dressed, sporting woolen button-down jackets.
Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding and an apparent lack of common sense, Cardigan
lead that same well-dressed brigade into a disastrous cavalry battle against the
Russians at Balklava during the Crimean war. Over half the men were slaughtered, and
the event was immortalized in Tennyson's poem, Charge of the Light Brigade.
His name, Cardigan, is used today to describe a knitted sweater that buttons down the front
similar to the original woolen jackets worn by his ill-fated brigade
In one of the great ironies of knitting history, (if there are any) the other namesake
of a sweater style, Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, Lord Raglan (1788-1855), was also
involved in the battle described in Charge of the Light Brigade.
Raglan had his right arm amputated following damage it received at the battle of Waterloo.
His tailor then designed a special short coat for him with a diagonal sleeve seam running
from under the arm to the neckline making it easier for Lord Raglan to dress himself. With
this simple innovation, a classic sweater shape was invented.
It just so happens that Lord Raglan was the one who gave the Earl of Cardigan the
order that was misunderstood on this day in 1854 and led to the near complete massacre
of the Light Brigade!
A more complete article by Ann Richards
can be found by clicking on her name and the end of the construction project can be viewed right
here on Driveway Cam ~
Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 ~
Driveway Cam got a late start today but found the contractors
had started early and are making great progress ~ they said
they will finish up today. You'll know it 10 minutes after
we do via your eye on the driveway and the surrounding tri-view
Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 ~
Might be Day Three of construction....rain is due most of
the day, brick due to be delivered this morning (looks like
they both made it) and rumor has it they are going to
finish up the project today. The question remains will they?
[please remember driveway cam does not encourage wagering] Happy
Monday, October 22nd, 2007 ~
Oh boy oh boy!! Day Two of construction (day one is in
the family pages if you missed it). It's also the
birthday of Doris Lessing who just won the Nobel Prize.
Great day for reading and viewing!
Sunday, October 21th, 2007 ~
Here it is again, the anniversary of the light bulb! At
1:30 in the morning on this day in 1879, Edison hooked a
carbon filament up to an electric circuit and it glowed
from 1:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. the following afternoon.
The worlds longest burning lightbulb, began operation in
1901 and is *still* glowing strong as driveway cam viewers
know. If you haven't been out to check on it in a while
here is the link
http://www.centennialbulb.org/ ~ one click and you're
there. (it's also in the table of links below). Happy
Saturday, October 20th, 2007 ~
A rain delay was called yesterday and the sidewalk project
came to a halt less than an hour after it got started.
But, we did get this lovely token of their
promise to return. If I find the keys for it I'm taking
it joy riding around the yard ~ stay tuned and enjoy the
Friday, October 19th, 2007 ~
The storms that you in the midwest and south
had yesterday are moving into our area today
as well. Doesn't bode well for any sidewalk
construction but if you like watching wind
on the driveway you're in the right spot! ~
Thursday, October 18th, 2007 ~ As the game of hunt the contractor continues
we'd like to take this opportunity to wish Dieter a happy birthday,
the Millers a happy anniversary! If you are in the storm watch areas
today we hope you all hold on to your hats and have a safe day of viewing ~
Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 ~ As we all recover from the late night
reveling of National Feral Cat Day, we can, without too much exertion,
keep an eye on the driveway to see if the front yard reconfiguration
gets started today... or maybe just enjoy watching it rain. (ps - driveway
cam would like to remind it's viewers that hair of the dog won't help
your NFCD hangover!)
Tuesday, October 16th, 2007 ~ A very merry Feral Cat Day to all driveway
cam viewers and feral cats everywhere! Don't know yet if they are going
to actually start work on the walk today....it's a mystery that will be
revealed right before all of our eyes. Enjoy the views ~
Monday, October 15th, 2007 ~
Some big doings in the drivewaycam viewing area this week. A
bit of reconstruction of the front walk ~ much of which will be
visible for your viewing pleasure. With some adjusted camera
angles for the not so visible parts. The gas and electric
company was out staking the lines today to prevent any spectacular
viewing events when they start digging (hopefully).
Sunday, October 14th, 2007 ~
A late start but it looks like a lovely day of viewing
out there. It's also a lovely day for some ee cummings
as it is his birthday. [
Here is the link to his page from last year on drivewaycam] Enjoy ~
Saturday, October 13th, 2007 ~
Hope you all have a great weekend and that you aren't
so busy you don't get to stop and watch the driveway ~
Friday, October 12th, 2007 ~
Happy Columbus Day again and here's to a whole day of viewing
the driveway as the PC has returned (yay!). And even as the lawn
gets shorn today, for perhaps the last time this season, the
snow word is being bandied about the forecast. Not exactly
here but in near-by parts. Driveway cam will of course keep you
up to date (albeit rather locally) on the situation ~
Thursday, October 11th, 2007 ~
Running late this morning....no updates on the picture of
the driveway (PC still being held hostage at a work session)(gasp!)
but enjoy the rest the world updating out there ~
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 ~
10/10 ~ another condo day for the PC and few updates
of the driveway....but that simply allows for more
penguin spotting and have you seen the moss lately???
Tuesday, October 9th, 2007 ~
Another few updates Tuesday is happening...but the rest of
the links will be refreshing (in any number of ways) all
Monday, October 8th, 2007 ~
Happy Columbus Day! ~ even though this isn't the day that Columbus landed in
the new (to him) world. Driveway cam is confused by made-up bank holidays...
but happy for the extra viewing time they offer driveway viewers. It was
a busy weekend out on the links, (snow out west, leaves out east, penguins down
south, more snow still out west) if not out on the driveway. The heat and
humidity seem to be back 'round these parts so the snow and penguin viewing
sounds pretty good......... Enjoy!
Sunday, October 7th, 2007 ~
It is with great delight that driveway announces....They're Baaaaaack.....
And many happy viewing returns of the day ~
Saturday, October 6th, 2007 ~
There is snow in Montana, but it feels like July here and yet
it really is the first Saturday in October?!? Makes for interesting
viewing on the links. And, in some great viewing news, one of the Antarctic
cameras is back on-line!! Don't know if the penguins are back
yet but we may catch sight of them, if you see them let us know....from the
(which is the FREE RANGE PENGUIN LINK BELOW) click
on "next camera" until you get to the 3rd page of cameras and the last one
there seems to be live ~
Friday, October 5th, 2007 ~
It's Friday and not just any old Friday but one before a bank holiday
Monday which means, for some of you out there, you have a 3 day weekend
(of more viewing of course) waiting for you some where around 5:00.....
to help you get to 5:00 here is the driveway to watch in 10
minute increments and of course the rest of the planet to
look in on as a diversion. Enjoy!
Thursday, October 4th, 2007 ~
The PC was still out yesterday so no updates, but driveway cam
is back this morning (looking rather Monet like due to a blown
window seal). Today marks the 50th anniversary of the launch
of Sputnik and the start of the space race. For more pictures click
here and if you google 'Sputnik' you can spend the day reading all sorts of interesting articles about
it (when you aren't out watching the driveway or your other favorite views of course).
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 ~
The PC is off to the condo today, leaving drivewaycam to
ponder the mysteries of the driveway alone. However all
the other views are out there waiting for you....and speaking
of out there...the penguins are probably back by now....
sure do hope they get the cameras fixed soon. Happy
Tuesday and enjoy the views ~
Monday, October 1st, 2007 ~
It's here! October! Things can start going bump in the
night! We've got at least another week or two of 80 degree
weather but then we are hoping (fingers crossed everyone)
for some actual fall weather befitting the month.
After all, in Croatian, rumor has it, October is called Listopad,
meaning leaves fall.
So break out the ghost stories, the cider, the donuts, the
sweaters and the rakes; with any luck we'll get to them
all before the month ends ~
Sunday, September 30th, 2007 ~
Thirty days hath September, and the last of those
is here for viewing on the driveway ~
Saturday, September 29th, 2007 ~
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, hope that it
is where ever you are viewing from as well ~ looks like
a great day to get out and see some leaves, or if you
can't get out you can always leaf-peep here.
(link is in the table below too) Enjoy the views ~
Friday, September 28th, 2007 ~
Last Friday of the month already?! Amazing. Driveway Cam
and it's viewers would like to wish Catherine a very happy
birthday today! Also, it was just 941 years ago, today, that William
the Conqueror landed in England (to begin his conquering) and
in China, today is the celebration of the birthday of Confucius as
well. What do those things have in common? Absolutely nothing.
But it does give you something to ponder while you enjoy the views ~
Thursday, September 27th, 2007 ~
A not so quiet day on the driveway is due today, one that will include:
a couple of trips out and back in, a 'howdy' from the UPS guy (we're hoping)
and maybe even some rain (!?!). Pace yourselves and please, view responsibly.
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 ~
If your skies have been clear enough at night you've been
seeing the waxing moon shining oh so brightly ~ if you
get the chance, check out the full Harvest Moon tonight (driveway
cam would show it if it could), it should be lovely. Daylight
viewing will no doubt be lovely too and perhaps full of
surprises like yesterday when there was snow in Wyoming
and the tail (??) of something that stopped by to watch
it snow....anyone know what this might have been?
Happy Viewing! (And a happy birthday to TS Eliot who would
have been 119 today)
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007 ~
There is nothing like a cool clear crisp day in Autumn...and
that is exactly what we are getting ~ nothing like a cool clear
crisp Autumn day. Going up to 90 'round these parts. The PC
is going to a meeting, so driveway cam gets the day off. Which
is just as well the heat makes it's eye water. The rest of the
views are out there waiting for you and when not viewing you
can always read some Faulkner or Silverstein in honor of their
birthdays today. Enjoy the views online or of Yoknapatawpha
county or from where the sidewalk ends........
Monday, September 24th, 2007 ~
A couple new links down in the table, a new work week
getting underway and a new year starting for Greta ~ Happy
Birthday Greta! Happy viewing as the last week in September
starts rolling down the driveway.
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007 ~
As of 5:51 this morning...it's Autumn! The sun is directly over the
equator once again and everyone on the planet gets 12 hrs of daylight
and 12 hrs of dark today. So balance some eggs, or balance your checkbook,
take a deep breath in, and then let it out, while we teeter here.
Enjoy the equilibrium of the equinox and of course, the views ~
Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 ~
Good weather viewing day out on the links today. There are heavy snow warnings and snow
advisories in effect for the upper elevations in California and Montana, there is rain in
the west and south, and rain is working it's way up the east coast. All of that will get here
eventually, but for now, here in upstate NY, it looks like the last day of summer is going
to be a lovely one out on the driveway...
Friday, September 21st, 2007 ~
Today is Take a Hobbit to Lunch Day ~ as it was this date back
in 1937 that The Hobbit was published. It is also the last
Friday of 'official' Summer. So after lunch you and your
hobbit friends should frolic a little and enjoy the views
Thursday, September 20th, 2007 ~
Driveway Cam is taking the pirates patch off it's eye and
once again is bringing you the driveway and all of it's
nuanced excitement ~
Wednesday, September 19th, 2007 ~
Ahoy there! Tueday was caught on film (sort of), even though it looked like Monday
in the text. Today the PC is off to a meeting leaving driveway cam
to pout because it can't show you
Talk Like A Pirate Day! on the driveway.
Cheryl gave us the info, found some very helpful links and we are passing it all on.
You can easily
translate from English to Pirate using this link and for information on the
view point of the holiday check here Thanks Cheryl, and to the rest of ye hearties;
Hoist the Colors and happy sailing ~
Monday, September 17th, 2007 ~
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood and driveway
cam will be here sharing it, and all of your other favorite
neighborhoods to check in on, all day ~
Sunday, September 16th, 2007 ~
The last day of the Fiber Festival
is today. The weather is supposed to be better than yesterday.
And all those dopplers couldn't be wrong could they? The
Worlds Biggest Sock will be there again today, so come on down
and help up knit on it for a while and get your daily fiber
Saturday, September 15th, 2007 ~
It may be quite a damp day down at the Hemlock Fairgrounds where the
is being held ~ but what's a little rain and mud? The
Worlds Biggest Sock will be there, come on down and help up knit on
it for a while. Bring your umbrella and some mud chains....
Friday, September 14th, 2007 ~
Looks like a beautiful Friday out there (for a while anyway, storms are due in
later in the day). Hope you all have a good day of viewing. This is
the weekend of the Hemlock Fiber Festival
so you if can get away you should come on down (or up, or over, or.....). And, if it's
fiber festival time can the penguins be far behind???
Thursday, September 13th, 2007 ~
Where has the week gone? It's Thursday here, hope it's something like
that wherever you are. Enjoy ~
Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 ~
Didn't get the camera hooked up this morning, no updates here
but your favorite links are current.....
Monday, September 10th, 2007 ~
The PC has to attend 3 days of meetings ~ so, driveway updates in the
morning and then early evening. Which will leave lots of time to
explore your other favorite views! Enjoy ~
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 ~
Hope everyone who needs it is enjoying some of the rainshine that is
falling on the driveway. Whether it's from the line of showers
that currently extends over most of our viewers area or from Gabrielle as
it approaches our NC viewer (Hi Catherine!) could be a good day for a
little viewing, a little napping, a little viewing....
Saturday, September 8th, 2007 ~
Saturday's main performance is now showing on the driveway ~
Friday, September 7th, 2007 ~
That buzzing in your ears is the trace memory of the first
all-electronic television picture ever transmitted 80 years
ago this very day and which is still out there, somewhere, they say.
From an account of Philo Farnsworth's (the inventor) life and works
this link provided by Writers Almanac:
History should take note of Farnsworth's reaction. After all,
we learn in school that Samuel Morse's first telegraph message
was "What hath God wrought?" Edison spoke into his phonograph,
"Mary had a little lamb." And Don Ameche — I mean, Alexander
Graham Bell — shouted for assistance: "Mr. Watson, come here,
I need you!" What did Farnsworth exclaim?
"There you are," said Phil, "electronic television."
Mr. Farnsworth decided he had created a monster and never owned a TV
or allowed one in his home. But I don't think even he would have minded
wandering the links and watching the driveway! Enjoy the views ~
Thursday, September 6th, 2007 ~
Summer, which really never left, has wandered back and is packing heat...
the driveway joins the rest of you as temperatures here hit the 90's today and
tomorrow. The artic views offer some cool relief if you need a break ~ stay
out of the sun and keep hydrated! (Driveway Cam is such a worrier about it's
Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 ~
It's a great time of year to plan a road trip,
and a great road to plan it on is the same one that Jack Kerouac wandered
down and then wrote about in his book On The Road ~ which was first published 50 years
But if driving across country isn't on your to-do list for today you can always wander
the country via driveway cam and save a little on gas!! Enjoy ~
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007 ~
Sure it's back to work today, but it's a short week so get your
viewing in early ~ p.s. - the Mt St Helen site has added a high
def version of the picture that is very nice.
Monday, September 3rd, 2007 ~
Happy Labor Day! Hope you are able to take time out of your celebrations and parading
today to not only look for the union label, but also check out your favorite views.
Sunday, September 2nd, 2007 ~
We're back....but you probably noticed that from the hosed
up first picture(s) of the morning! (still working on getting
my land legs back) We had a great time, some pictures at some
point soon, and now it's September!! Welcome to [unofficial] Autumn
as it begins to play out down the driveway ~
Saturday, August 25th, 2007 ~
Because the Lake House Vacation worked so well last year we are
off to try it again. Driveway cam will be reporting on the driveway
from 7 AM to 7 PM each day while we are gone (we will be "unplugged"
at the lake). With luck this year the PC and Driveway Cam will manage to
play together nicely. Hope you all have a great week, where ever you are
(even if you are off to college for your first week there!!!!)
Here is a parting shot of our brand new water shoes before they are
introduced to the lake ~ See you back here in September!!! Enjoy
Friday, August 24th, 2007 ~
Today is the birthday of that great American, Da-Veed Du Bog ~ Happy
Birthday Boggy!!! And it's a Friday too!! Viewing can't help but be
great today. Enjoy ~
Thursday, August 23rd, 2007 ~
A couple of deliveries are due today! We love it when the big brown truck
comes to visit here at driveway cam. A few trips out and back, but mainly
a lazy day on the driveway ~ enjoy the views!
Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007 ~
There is a new link out there for the National Geographic Africa Cam, to replace Grizzly Cam which
ended for the season.
And today is Ray Bradbury's birthday ~
I'm still wishing I had some Dandelion Wine to drink
in his honor. Here is a link to
an interesting article on Fahrenheit-451 and what Bradbury thought it was about.....
If you haven't read anything by him, today would be the perfect day to remedy that,
and it's also the perfect day to re-read your favorite Bradbury story or book. Enjoy!
"You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them." ~ Ray Bradbury
Tuesday, August 21st, 2007 ~
Catch the grizzlies while you can, National Geographic announced that today is the last day
of Grizzly Cam
for the season (high winds and repeaters don't get along well).
And interesting statistic from NASA: Earth and Mars are converging, and right now the
distance between the two planets is shrinking at a rate of 22,000 mph--or about 25 miles per
sentence. Love that measurement!! Oops there goes another 25 miles!! Interesting viewing
on the 27th is coming up, and while we're
hurtling toward Mars you may want to check out this link.
Monday, August 20th, 2007 ~
Can't see Voyager 2,
launched 30 years ago, on it's way towards Sirius and more than 5 billion miles away from the sun,
but the views a bit more locally are just as amazing. (Sure Voyager 2 has
seen Saturn up close but has it seen the Longest Burning Lightbulb in History??)
Whatever you view, enjoy ~
[And in other space news the space shuttle had to leave the space station early to get home ahead of
Hurricane Dean; they are due back tomorrow.]
Sunday, August 19th, 2007 ~
Looks like it's going to be a great day on the driveway, a few trips
are planned, there may be some unplanned, and sunshine for a fair thee
Saturday, August 18th, 2007 ~
Welcome to Saturday on the Driveway! Should be a lovely viewing day.
It's also the birthday of Ms. Delores Beedle (whom some of you know
as Pat), so please help her celebrate by wearing your party hats while viewing ~
Friday, August 17th, 2007 ~
Oops! Forgot to update the text here yesterday ~ but it really is
Friday here and (almost every) there at least for the moment. Driveway
Cam wishes you and yours a most delightful day of viewing and hopefully
cooler viewing for everyone down south.
Wednesday, August 15th, 2007 ~
In Kentucky, and perhaps other states, traffic is no doubt snarled this morning as
this is the first day of the new school year! Historically this has been a stop and
go traffic day any number of times.
93 years ago today the
Panama Canal opened for traffic ~ the Miraflores camera isn't working but the
other 2 at this site are (the Centennial Bridge is a great view), 46 years ago today
in Berlin the Berlin Wall was begun on the roads that had been blocked to stop traffic
there, and 38 years ago today traffic came to a complete standstill in Woodstock NY
(and surrounding areas) as an estimated 300,000 people showed up for a music festival
there. Considering all that it's going to be a quiet day on the driveway with very
little traffic (boat, car, bus or foot) to speak of. So park yourself and enjoy the
Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 ~
Looks like another glorious day on the driveway ~
Monday, August 13th, 2007 ~
Didn't see meteor one last night ~ did anyone out there get to see any? (going to try tonight as it moves on out of here).
It's another manic Monday on the driveway. As well it should be since it's
Alfred Hitchcock's birthday! If you've ever played the Where-Is-He game for his appearances in his movies just
click the link and you'll find a list of all of them. Something to do while easing your way back into the work week! Something
in addition to checking out your favorite links of course ~
Sunday, August 12th, 2007 ~
The Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight starting around 9:00 and increasing through till dawn. We're hoping for clear skies as
some of us fell asleep last night (when there were clear skies) and didn't get out to watch ~ And you may want to check out the
link to Pike's Peak where 106 years ago today the first automobile trip
was made up the 14,110 feet to the top. (weird factoids r us). Hmmmm I wonder if they stayed to watch the meteor shower from up there?
Have a great Sunday and enjoy the views ~
Saturday, August 11th, 2007 ~
The birthday sheep (?) wishes a very Happy Birthday to Marty today and a very Happy Saturday to the rest of us ~
Friday, August 10th, 2007 ~
It's Friday! The shuttle is scheduled to hook up with the space station, the Perseid meteor shower
is upon us, the heat wave goes on, there are Millers camping at Mammoth Cave and who knows they might
just appear on the Mammoth Cave cam
(don't roll your eyes, it could happen). Have a great Friday and enjoy the views ~
Thursday, August 9th, 2007 ~
Bman, Hannah, and Cheryl have sadly returned to the south ~ pictures posted soon. If you feel the
need to simplify simplify simplify today just go with it. As it's the anniversary of the publishing of
Walden, and in the midst of the heat wave blasting
through the country the best thing you can do is sit back with a tall cool glass of ice tea and watch
the world go by on driveway cam. Enjoy the views!
Tuesday, August 7th, 2007 ~
Last day of the visit ~ trying to get driveway cam and the pc reunited for some end of
visit pictures.......watch and you just may see a Bman masterpiece appear ~
Sunday, August 5th, 2007 ~
Sorry for the gap in the driveway cam coverage. We've been very busy since Bman and
crew arrived and haven't had a chance to get the cam up and running consistently. It will be
hooked up again this morning for your viewing pleasure. It's Wendell Berry's birthday
today ~ if you haven't read his poetry, or prose, today would be a perfect day to
visit your local book monger and treat yourself to any of Berry's books. Enjoy the views ~
Tuesday, July 31st, 2007 ~
Special! Special! Get your special Tuesday here ~ not only is today the birthday of the
author of the Harry Potter series with a special birthday link right here but also today, this very day,
muggles from the south are wending their way up for a visit!!! Brannaman, Hannah, and Cheryl
will be arriving on the driveway early evening provided the enchantment on both Amy and
Cheryl's cars stays in place. (fingers crossed) And with the usual hectic pace on the driveway...
well you might just need to pace your viewing today.
Monday, July 30th, 2007 ~
Hey ~ It's Monday!!!! And a full moon Monday at that! It's also the last Monday of July,
and the last time, until May 2008 until there is a full moon on a Monday and the last time
until June 2008 that there is a Monday on a 30th .....any one know when the next Monday, Full Moon
and 30th all collide? Let us know if you figure it out ~
Sunday, July 29th, 2007 ~
Saturday seems to have wandered in and out rather quickly, and here it is the last Sunday of
July. NASA turns 49 today!!!!!
To celebrate you can check the schedule for your location and
watch the International Space Station go by - you'll find the schedule here.
Or you can bake them a cake....they'd like that too! And whether it's down the driveway or up in the sky... enjoy the

A vewy vewy happy Fwiday! Today is the annivewsawy of the first appeawance of Bugs Bunny back in 1940 when the
wowld heard him say, fow the vewy first time... Eh, what's up, Doc? Keep a wook-out on the dwiveway today, that

Thursday, July 26th, 2007 ~
And speaking of in vitro...today is the birthday of one of our favorites, Aldous Huxley, who was first
to write about the possibility of such things in Brave New World. Of all the things he predicted in that
book we don't remember any mention about technology being developed to bring you the constantly updating
(in 10 minute increments) view of all the heart pounding drama and action (hey, don't laugh, there might
be some at some point) that happens (insert dramatic futuristic music here) on the driveway.
Huxley couldn't imagine it but it's here none the less. Just for you, so enjoy the views ~
Wednesday, July 25th, 2007 ~
On this sunny day as we hit midweek on the driveway we'd like to wish the very first
test-tube baby, born in Oldham, England, a Happy 29th birthday! It was also 29
years ago today that baseball's (and Cincinnati's) troubled son Pete Rose broke the National League
record for consecutive base hits as he got a hit in 38 straight games.
And now, on to
the views ~
Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 ~
On this day back in 1701 a group of frenchmen led by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac
chose a settlement site for its high river banks and began to build their fort.
They called their discovery at this narrow point in the river "the strait," or in
their language, "d'etroit." (thanks to findarticles.com) You can see how their fort turned out by clicking
here: Happy Birthday Detroit!
Monday, July 23rd, 2007 ~
The last full week of July is under way here on the driveway and out on the links ~
Sunday, July 22nd, 2007 ~
Looks like a beautiful Sunday out there (so far) this morning. Hope
where ever you and whatever your weather that yours is too. Enjoy the
day and of course the views ~
Saturday, July 21st, 2007 ~
Whether you are flinging flamingos today or reading Deathly Hallows or just
sitting back enjoying the views, driveway cam will be here, keeping it's eye
on the driveway to keep you updated on all the driveway news ~
Friday, July 20th, 2007 ~
It was on this day in 1875 that the largest recorded swarm of locusts in American
history descended upon the Great Plains. It was a swarm about 1,800 miles long,
110 miles wide, from Canada down to Texas. Not terribly unlike the swarm that should
be descending upon bookstores tonight at midnight! That's right ~ it's Harry Potter
Eve!!! Time to grab your wands and practice your Accio spell to get book #7 to fly
off the shelves and into your hands at the stroke of midnight! (with thanks to Writer's
Almanac and to JK Rowling for her wonderful story and amazing magic that had an 11
year old tell me recently that 600 pages wasn't really that long of a book........)
Thursday, July 19th, 2007 ~
Today is the day, back in 1954, that the first part of the Lord of the Rings
trilogy came out, The Fellowship of the Ring. It is also the day, way back
in 2005, that our own little hobbit Lexi made her appearance!
A very Happy Birthday Lexi!!!! Welcome to the terrific twos and have a wonderful

A little more rain today and there may just be more of that strange green color that
seems to be spreading in the lawn ...... Today is the 2 yr anniversary of the
'Previously on Driveway Cam' trial run added to the bottom of the page for Ms. Cheryl who couldn't sign on everyday
but didn't want to fall behind in all the driveway news. And as the jury hasn't returned a
verdict yet in this trial, previously marches on ~
Tuesday, July 17th, 2007 ~
Well, yesterday seems to have been the 16th, not the 15th which means that
today we wish Aunt Joyce and Roger much love and a very Happy Anniversary!!!
In Vermont the birds are still not quite believing what they are
reading, and elsewhere, the views go on. Enjoy!
Monday, July 15th, 2007 ~
A new week brings some new links out on the family page. Also some
link news. For those of you who watch the weathercam/birdfeeder in
Vermont, there seems to be trouble in Coles Pond. The Department of
Wildlife in Vermont has ordered the home owner to remove not only
the feeder in front of the webcam but ALL of his bird feeders.....
someone reported seeing a deer there and it's illegal to feed deer
in Vermont. Apparently it's illegal for deer to feed themselves at
your bird feeders too. The webcam/homeowner has been threatened with
arrest ~ it's an interesting story (to some of us) as it unfolds and
if you want to know more you can read about it via a link on the
webpage or jump there directly by
clicking here. Enjoy the views (while you can!!)
Sunday, July 15th, 2007 ~
A quiet Sunday on the driveway. Enjoy the views!
Saturday, July 14th, 2007 ~
Take some time out from storming any Bastilles in your area and
celebrate with some cake (!) and ice cream ~ and of course with
some driveway viewing.....
Friday, July 13th, 2007 ~
Don't step on a crack, don't see a black cat, don't break a
mirror, don't walk under a ladder, don't spill the salt, don't
open an umbrella in the house, don't see an owl in the daylight,
don't sing before breakfast, don't put a hat on a bed, and what
ever you do don't leave the house without checking the views ~
it's Friday the 13th as brought to you by Driveway Cam, the
garlic of web cams...............!
Thursday, July 12th, 2007 ~
Smile for the Camera! It's the birthday of
George Eastman today and in his honor we should all get our pictures taken
(on Kodak film of course, or with a Kodak digital camera). According to Writer's
Almanac George was working at a bank when he got interested in photography
around 1877. He took his first dry plate photograph the next year with
the camera that he invented—a view of the building across the street
from his window. He developed this little handheld camera, and he called
it the Kodak because it was easy to remember, difficult to misspell,
and it meant nothing, so it could only be associated with his product.
~ Send us your "George Eastman Birthday Photo" and we'll post them
here. Happy snapping!
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007 ~
Holy Moly! Turned on the camera but forgot to upload any new text.
Well it's been Wednesday all day, it's rained buckets on and off,
and now it's early Wednesday evening and the sun appears to be out.
Hope your day was a good one and that you enjoyed watching the day
run on down the driveway ~
Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 ~
It's H-O-T up here; and chances are it is where ever you are too. The only
solution is a large glass of ice tea or lemonade, a shady tree with an outlet
for your computer and some cooling views of

Big Big day on Driveway Cam!! It's Mark's birthday!!! (yea!) Happy Birthday Mark!!!
And here's to many, many more.
It's also new link day here on driveway cam. There are 2 new links in the table below.
The Empire State Building cam is off line so it's being replaced here with a link to
National Geographic Grizzly Cam! And the Sulphur Mountain cam has been retired
to make room for (are you ready?) Cockroach Cam!!!
(who said the internet was a waste of time?) Check them out. If you are missing the old
links they are on the retired links page, taking a well deserved rest.
Thursday, July 5th, 2007 ~
Hope that everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July and that everyone
can still count to 10 on their fingers......The 5th of July is the day, back in
1954 that Elvis Presley recorded his first rock and roll song and his first hit,
"That's All Right (Mama)". The B side to that very first recording was
"Blue Moon of Kentucky" (which rumor has it is the official bluegrass song of Kentucky).
Enough triva ~ on with the views!
Wednesday, July 4th, 2007 ~
A very *Happy Birthday* to Ms. Ellie who is 10 today!!!!
And to the country in general as it turns 231 today as well. Picnics
are in order ~ and fireworks all around!Have a happy and safe
Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007 ~
A lovely Tuesday is rolling on down the driveway - a perfect day to sit back and
watch the grass brown up! :)
Monday, July 2nd, 2007 ~
It's Monday morning! What are you waiting for? Get out there
and do the views ~
Sunday, July 1st, 2007 ~
Welcome to July on the Driveway! We're so glad you could join us!! Hot news of the
day ~ it was on this day in 1847 that the
US Postal Service issued its first postage stamps.
Before that, most letters were sent with the postage due upon delivery but you never
knew if the recipient would able to pay or willing to pay the delivery charge.
And here is the first stamp, as well as a stamp of Gettysburg, the battle of which started
on this day in 1863, and a stamp of Darwin, whose paper on evolution was first presented today
in 1858. Enjoy the pictures and of course the views ~
(with thanks to Writer's Almanac)
Saturday, June 30th, 2007 ~
Today is the birthday of dear O L D Louise! Happy Birthday you crazy *OLD* bat!
It's also the day that back in 1936
Gone With The Wind was published, with the main
character's name changed to Scarlett from Margaret Mitchell's orginal choice of Pansy.
And lastly but certainly not leastly it's the very last day of June that we get to watch roll down
the driveway this year. So settle in, grab some coffee, sit back and enjoy the views ~ and don't
forget to check out the moon rise tonight!
Friday, June 29th, 2007 ~
We learned from Writer's Digest this morning that it
was on this day in 1613 that the
Globe Theater burned to the ground. A cannon was fired during a performance
of Henry VIII to mark the King's entrance, the thatched roof
caught fire, and the whole theater was lost in an hour. Compared to that with only 3-4 trips (and no
cannon fire) planned it's going to a quiet day on the driveway giving you a chance to catch up
on all of your favorite views ~
Thursday, June 28th, 2007 ~
How did it get to be Thursday so quickly??? Hope you
are enjoying the last week in June and also the views ~
Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 ~
Forgot to update the text here today ~ sorry! The camera was
on however so hopefully you enjoyed the views ~
Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 ~
A hot day is brewing, so hopefully so is some ice tea out in the driveway cam
viewing area (which happens to be the entire planet so it's probably a pretty safe
bet that some where ice tea is brewing)(we'll be over to share a glass shortly!)
A busy day is on tap too what with water being delivered and any number of trips
(which includes 0 if you count that as a number) out and back in of the driveway
Find some shade, enjoy the views ~
Monday, June 25th, 2007 ~
Asleep at the wheel, forgot to change the camera from first-picture-of-the-day mode
and just wiped out 5 of the previous mornings shots! (oops). The MA's fell in a brilliant
battle in the semi-finals (I think it was the Bulgarians again that whomped on 'em). Here on the
driveway temperatures are rising. You have front row seat to watch them do just that. Hope
the start to the last week of June is a good one for everyone ~
Sunday, June 24th, 2007 ~
The M.A.'s are still in the hunt! They made it to the next
round and play again today. Good Luck to them and good viewing
to us all ~
Saturday, June 23rd, 2007 ~
Tonight is Midsummer's Eve
~ plan accordingly and keep an
eye out for the fairies in the woods while leaping and
dancing about this evening.
Cheryl's tennis team won both matches yesterday, 2 more
wins today and they are on to the next round! (Go M.A.'s!!)
A new kitchen hutch is getting delivered today, 'round 1 if you
are planning your viewing day. And a bunch of sunshine
and high pressure should be dancing and leaping around out
there all day for your general unplanned viewing pleasure ~ Enjoy
Friday, June 22nd, 2007 ~
Hope this start to the first weekend of Summer is a good one for
you. Just put the camera back to 10 minute updates ~ wouldn't want
you to overheat this early in the season! Have a great Friday
and best of luck to the MA's in Lexington (Cheryl's Tennis Team) as
they start their tournament down the road to being State Champions!!
Thursday, June 21st, 2007 ~
Welcome to Summer! The Summer solstice occurs at 2:06 p.m. EDT. This is
when the Sun is farthest north for the year in Earth's sky and begins
its six-month return southward. Summer begins in the Northern Hemisphere,
winter in the Southern Hemisphere and it's the longest day for driveway
viewing all year so pull up a comfortable chair and enjoy the show! We'll
have as many of the 15 hrs and 23 minutes of daylight here for you as
we can ~ in 6 minute increments...
Wednesday, June 20th, 2007 ~
Hope you enjoy all the views on the last full day of spring ~
you'll have more time to watch them today than almost any other
day this year...
Tuesday, June 19th, 2007 ~
The Happiest of Birthday Greetings to Karen today!!! To
celebrate it actually was a chelsea morning this morning
~ the sun did pour in looking exactly like butterscotch!
Thunderstorms are due to pour in this afternoon after the
temperature kicks in the 90 degree door....
Have a great day Karen, and everyone else enjoy the views
Monday, June 18th, 2007 ~

up on the nest news and all your other favorite views ~
Saturday, June 16th, 2007 ~
The plan for Bloomsday here is to clean the garage, or at least
to rearrange the mess that is in there. Could be some
interesting (?) views on the driveway....
Friday, June 15th, 2007 ~
It's a few updates Friday. The driveway picture won't
update much but the rest of the cams are out there
working for you. Enjoy the views!
Thursday June 14th, 2007 ~
A very Happy Flag Day ~ to all of our viewers wherever
Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 ~
Sorry for the on again-off again nature of Driveway Cam
the last few weeks. Technical issues, working at the
condo issues, traveling issues....all have conspired to
keep driveway cam from it's appointed rounds. However,
for today at the very least there is a return of sorts...
the wonky view for the day is ~ Deck Cam ~ not as
thrilling as Driveway Cam but it's what we've got for
today so please enjoy the views!
Friday, June 8th, 2007 ~
Not only is it FRIDAY!!! But with any luck (and most
hopefully) it's also grass mowing day ~ put your feet
up and enjoy the views......
Thursday, June 7th, 2007 ~
And we're back......not sure for how long but for now the
driveway is online again. Enjoy the views!
Wednesday, June 6th, 2007 ~
Sorry for the technical problems......the rest of the links
here are working and fine it's just the driveway cam and
the PC who are at odds. Working on it - enjoy the rest
of the views until the driveway gets back!
Friday, June 1st, 2007 ~
Well it's June, believe it or not, and it will be for the next 30 days but
this is the first day so get out there and start enjoying it (and the views!)~
Tuesday, May 29th, 2007 ~
A Hap-Hap-Happy Birthday to the one, the only, B-Man!!!!!! We all hope
it's a wonderful day (and year!) for you ~
Monday, May 28th, 2007 ~
Happy Memorial Day!
Sunday, May 27th, 2007 ~
It is a little rainy here today ~ which means it's a great
day to play "Look for Lydia" (with a side game of Hunt for
Hannah II). She (they) is (are) on a field trip to NYC
which means lots o' opportunity for looking for her (them).
There are traffic cams,
times square cams,
times square in high res,
other street cams,
and tall building cams
all over the place ~ if you find her (them)
save the picture and send it in!!! Let the games begin ~
Saturday, May 26th, 2007 ~
It's here!! The weekend!! We at driveway cam hope it's a
memorable one for you. It's starting with a day that has
exactly 15 hrs of daylight in it (at least 'round these
driveway parts) ~ missed the first few but the rest are here
for you: enjoy the views ~
Friday, May 25th, 2007 ~
Welcome to Friday on the driveway ~ it's too hot to do
much of anything and with the price of gasoline out there
we recommend you pour a tall glass of ice tea or lemonade,
and then get thee to a veranda, deck, porch, fire escape,
stoop, or under a tree and just sit back and enjoy the views......
Thursday, May 24th, 2007 ~
Today is the 57th (!!!!!!) birthday of Jim Bo Billy Bob!!
We know you will all join in the celebration by wishing
him a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007 ~
As the tree is mostly done blooming it's back to a view of
all the action on the driveway. You never know, there just
might be some. Enjoy the views!
Monday, May 21st, 2007 ~
Today is the 80th anniversary of Lindbergh's
transatlantic flight from
New York to Paris. Modern aviation owes a great debt to his amazing
skill and sense of adventure. In fact, Delta still
uses, as do others perhaps, the exact same navigation methods Lindbergh used. No fancy GPS or
high tech tomfoolery for them ~ what worked then, and what works now is the
dotted line on a map! Lindbergh's Map from 1927
Delta's Map from Charlie's Birthday Trip 2003
Sunday, May 20th, 2007 ~
Today is the last day of the Lilac Festival ~ if you haven't
gotten out to smell the lilacs now is the time. A little showery this morning but it is supposed to
clear up. You'll know almost as soon as we do if/when that happens. Enjoy the views!
Saturday, May 19th, 2007 ~
It was a busy week out on the links, the falcons in Cleveland were
banded, the grass didn't get mowed, the ice continued to be
melted in Maine, the tree next to the driveway peaked and is
slowly fading ~ but don't lose your cool if you missed any of
those things, the weekend is sure to be exciting too. Driveway
cam hopes none of it's viewers lose their shirts betting on
the Preakness today. And writer's digest reminds us that today
is the anniversary of when
Anne Boleyn lost her head.....
So while you are viewing today please also keep an eye on your cool, your
shirt and your head! Enjoy the views ~
Thursday, May 17th, 2007 ~
It's quite possible that today is lawn-mowing day ~ it's almost
as possible that it isn't but please (as they say) no wagering!
Enjoy the views ~
Wednesday, May 16th, 2007 ~
A quiet day on the driveway............
Tuesday, May 15th, 2007 ~
A rainy start to the day ~ keep watching, it should blow on
out of here. [And while you are watching, take note: some of
the watch-ees are watching back!]
Monday, May 14th, 2007 ~
Today is the anniversary of the start of the Lewis and Clark
Expedition. (Writer's Almanac provided this great link) Get out today and explore some of the
nooks and crannies of Driveway Cam or the unknown territories of your own neighborhood! (don't forget
to draw a map of where you go)
Sunday, May 13th, 2007 ~
A very happy Mother's day to everyone viewing the driveway today!
Saturday, May 12th, 2007 ~
And just like that...it's Saturday on the driveway ~
Friday, May 11th, 2007 ~
Pull out all the stops today ~ it is the birthday of
Minnesota!! The State of Minnesota is 149 years old today!! And
our friends at Writer's Almanac tell us that it was from Minnesota
that we got the stapler, water skis and roller blades,
Scotch tape, Bisquick, Bob Dylan, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Spam.
Words escape me but links do not......and here is one for the
Spam Museum ,and one for
the history of scotch tape , and of course we cannot leave out
the Bisquick home page!!
So celebrate today by taking a virtual pilgrimage to all things Minnesota, when you aren't checking
out your favorite views of course.
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 ~
The PC was in all day meetings and sadly couldn't assist Driveway Cam
with getting driveway news out there the past few days. That shouldn't happen
again (all day meetings, multiple days in a row should never happen
ever but I digress). Get a beverage, put your feet up and
enjoy the views....with a little more tree in the picture for a few
days so you can watch it bloom.
Wednesday Afternoon, May 9th, 2007 ~
After a lapse....welcome to the return of Driveway Cam ~ Enjoy the views!
Sunday, May 6th, 2007 ~
A few derby dollars were won here and today is derby
recovery day with a couple of comings and goings in the driveway,
and lots of sunshine. Enjoy the views ~
Saturday, May 5th, 2007 ~
Busy day on the driveway....there is the run for the haircut,
the run for the groceries, the run for the juleps (there will
be several of those), the run for the snacks, the run to the
OTB all to get ready for the fastest 2 minutes in sports!?!
Here is the link to the
paddock cam, good luck to everyone's pick in
the Derby today! (still don't have a pick here, but we're
working on it....as soon as we figure out what horses are in the
running for the Run for the Roses!) Have a great Ky Derby Day ~
Friday, May 4th, 2007 ~
Today is the Kentucky Oaks and tomorrow T.H.E. Derby ~ so it is,
of course, time for
paddock cam!! And if you are still wondering about which
horse to pick for tomorrow (or if you are like driveway cam and
still don't actually know who is running....) you can
this Derby site and get all the scoop! Enjoy the views ~
Thursday, May 3rd, 2007 ~
Another lovely day out there. Didn't get the tote board
updated yet, but I hear rumors of chicks and hope to
catch them on camera soon! Enjoy the views ~
Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007 ~
Looks like it's going to be a sunny day out there on the
driveway ~ hopefully a day to get caught up with checking in
on the nests, and finally getting the tote board updated!
Enjoy the views ~
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007 ~
Today Ms Hannah Banana turns 18 !??! Here is to a most wonderful
day for you Hannah ~ Happy Birthday with love from everyone in, at
and around driveway cam!
Monday, April 30th, 2007 ~
Last day of the month, and it should be a good day for viewing all around...you can
watch the future slide past the pyramids, the present in the bird's nest nearest
you and the past as the day makes it's way off the coast and into the Pacific. Enjoy ~
Sunday, April 29th, 2007 ~
Lots of sunshine going to be raining down on the driveway today ~ enjoy!
Saturday, April 28th, 2007 ~
Heard there are chicks now in Cleveland; if you get to see them send
in a picture. Enjoy the views!!
Friday, April 27th, 2007 ~
Sally Melville, knitting teacher/author extraordinaire is in town for a weekend
of workshops ~ some of us here at driveway cam will be attending every chance
we get. May not be much checking on the nests from here, hope you'll keep an
eye on them for us! Enjoy the views ~
Thursday, April 26th, 2007 ~
The falcons in Cleveland are starting to hatch! And several trips
up and down the driveway will only add(?) to the excitement. Enjoy
the views ~
Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 ~
Spring is gespronging all over the place around town, forsythia, tulips,
daffodils, buds and some leaves on all the trees, magnolias are blooming,
quite amazing ~ the driveway may sprout a dandelion or two for you (that's
what is blooming around here) you just never know......
Tuesday, April 24th, 2007 ~
The last Tuesday of the month is shaping up to be a quiet one here on the
driveway...which leaves lots of time for nest hopping! Enjoy the views ~
Monday, April 23rd, 2007 ~
Today is the rumored birthday of The Bard! So be sure
to brush up your Shakespeare and to start practically quoting him now
click here, and visit his birthday page by clicking the previous link and just genererally have a great day enjoying the
driveway and other views (before a tempest blows in here this afternoon). Enjoy!
Sunday, April 22nd, 2007 ~
It's Earth Day
- when you aren't watching the driveway get out there and plant, or hug (or both)
a tree! Enjoy ~
Saturday, April 21st, 2007 ~
A very Happy Birthday to
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor (Queen Elizabeth II) who turns 81 today!
And in other birthday news it appears that the first stork chick has arrived !!!
Pints all around! And in honor of
both events the largest fireworks display in the country will be held tonight in Louisville as
Thunder Over Louisville also kicks off the countdown to the 133rd Kentucky Derby ~ be sure to
schedule some recovery time during the days viewing.
Friday, April 20th, 2007 ~
It is supposed to be a sunny, warm and even spring like (imagine that)
weekend here on the driveway and it's environs. A great day for
sitting back and watching the beehive of activity that is the driveway
and the nests!! (things should be a buzz in them soon)(hey wait....a bee
hive cam??!?!) More later ~ enjoy the views!
Thursday, April 19th, 2007 ~
It looks like a beautiful day out on the driveway ~ hope you all
enjoy the views!
Wednesday , April 18th, 2007 ~
The days are getting longer, 3 minutes at a time now, and hopefully,
one of these days we'll actually get some sun on the driveway. Could
be today, if you catch sight of it please let us know. Today is
the 237th anniversary of the
Midnight Ride of Paul Revere so if you
find yourself wanting to run around yelling The British are Coming!
just go with it ~
Tuesday, April 17th, 2007 ~
Still grey and damp out there. Makes it the perfect day for
watching the driveway and or reading! Reading can take you
on to a ledge in NY, out of Africa
or into our town without any cams at all ~ so where ever
you get the views today, enjoy!
Monday, April 16th, 2007 ~
Now you know why we call them rumors and not weather reports! Leaving the
link to Long Island here
so you can watch it and the other East coast cams to see how the storm is
actually slapping them around. We are still getting rain, who knows if we'll get
anything else.....well driveway cam will know and will let you know too!
Enjoy the views (and we hope all of you who are or were in the storm's path get
through it safely)
Sunday, April 15th, 2007 ~
The current rumor, or weather report if you will, says 7-11 inches
of snow over the next couple of days as the rain gives way to
flakes and the system stalls. You'll know if that happens almost as
soon as we do!Here is a Long Island
view of the water where it's
supposed to get pretty dicy a little later. That and hopping traffic cams
should keep you pretty busy and indoors today. Enjoy the view and
stay warm (and dry) where ever you are ~
Saturday, April 14th, 2007 ~
The calm before the storm here on the driveway today ~ a few
trips in and out to visit the Artistry in Threads festival
and lay in supplies....
Friday, April 13th, 2007 ~
No walking under ladders or breaking mirrors today ~ we have
enough on our collective plate what with it being Friday
the 13th! Keep your fingers crossed and if you are lucky you
may catch site of the eagle chicks today. Enjoy the views
and watch out for any black cats that might cross on a cam ~
Thursday, April 12th, 2007 ~
A very ~ Happy Birthday ~ to Ms Amanda Pebble who hits the double nickel mark
today with the grace of a woman half her age! (Or is it that she's going to hit
Grace who is a woman 1/2 her age????) Hope it's a great day for you Pebble!!!
Maxine has nothing on you!
Wednesday, April 11th, 2007 ~
A very merry middle of the week to you ~ enjoy the views and checking in on the
eagle chicks(!) as well as the rest of the nests... And
the elk are out this morning too!! (picture posted in
in case they wander off before you get there)
Tuesday, April 10th, 2007 ~
If you weren't able to see the nest pictures yesterday (rumors were heard) please scroll down
the page to the previously section.
Today is the 95th anniversary of the
Titanic's maiden, and only, voyage. There are exhibits in a number of locations including
Cincinnati (which closes May 6th) if you are in the vicinity ~ if you are not just pull up a chair and
you can watch today sail on down the driveway, through the nests, over the mountains and even out to sea...
Monday, April 9th, 2007 ~
As we all come down off of our sugar highs from yesterday, here
are a couple of shots of how some of the nests spent Easter! (the
falcon nest is the one in Cleveland ) ~
Sunday, April 8th, 2007 ~
Merry Easter!!! The clock seems to be fixed, but now it sort of looks
like the calendar is off ~ luckily we hid our eggs inside this year
so we don't have to take a snow shovel to find them.
Hope your Easter is a lovely one whatever the weather.
Saturday, April 7th, 2007 ~
Looks like it could be a lovely day despite the cold out there today. Hope your
Easter Eve is a good one! Enjoy the views and check out today's
special birthday if you have some time in between the nests and the
ice melting and the mountains.....and of course looking for the easter bunny!
Friday, April 6th, 2007 ~
Driveway cam hopes it is a very Good Friday for all of
our viewers ~ today is also the 98th anniversary of when
Robert Peary, Matthew Henson, and the Inuit men Egingwah, Seegloo, Ootah, and Ooqueah
(Iggianguaq, Sigluk, Odaq, and Ukkujaaq, as they are spelt today became, the first men to reach the
North Pole. (Although, further studies concluded that Peary probably came
up about 30 miles short.) North Pole cam isn't on yet this season
but here is a link to a location very near there in spirit if not in
If you are off work today, enjoy spending some extra time wandering the links and checking out the
Thursday, April 5th, 2007 ~
It may be a little confusing to look at but timestamp on the
driveway picture is an hour off. It thinks it is on central
time or something. The PC has been having major time issues
since we switched to daylight savings and seems to have now
infected the cam as well. The other confusing thing to look at
may be that white stuff coming down ~ but we're still ignoring
the rumor of it's existence here.
Wednesday, April 4th, 2007 ~
A somewhat quiet day is in store for the driveway ~ which will give
us all time to catch up with the nest views and news out there. (There
should be eagle chicks in Colorado next week!) And wonder of wonders the yard here has
achieved crocus! (may even get a picture of it posted today (before it
gets covered in the flurries that keep getting mentioned))
Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007 ~
Back and happy to see that driveway cam and the PC played nicely
while we were gone. The production of Kiss Me Kate was a smashing
success ~ Hannah was a wonderful Kate! And luckily the rest of the
trip, and Cheryl's move, was smash free ~ Enjoy the views as spring
gets ready to take a few days off and winter tries to visit again.
(rumors of snow are being ignored)
Thursday, March 29th, 2007 ~
Driveway Cam is on it's own for a couple of days, just going to let it
run so there may be updates, there may not. Down Kentucky way Hannah
is 'Kate' in her school production of 'Kiss Me Kate' and I have tickets for
the Saturday night performance. Driveway cam couldn't come up with
the money so it and the PC are going to mind the store while I'm
gone. Have a great weekend nest hopping and keeping track of the
driveway (and Jim)!
Wednesday, March 28th, 2007 ~
More spring on the driveway today, and an early (early for driveway cam)
trip out are just some of the wonders (?) on the links today ~ Enjoy!
Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 ~
Several trips in and out of the driveway and a delivery from UPS due in
today, plus all of the nest happenings ~ there may not be enough time
to take it all in!
Monday, March 26th, 2007 ~
And then there were 4. Hope your brackets are holding up at least a litte.
If you weren't on over the weekend you might be confused by the table of
links below ~ driveway cam did some spring cleaning and moving and replacing over
the weekend...all of the links removed are on the
RETIRED LINKS page so don't panic if you can't find one of your favorites,
it's not lost, it just moved. Try out the new links, find out if watching
mold grow on cheese is even more fun than watching ice melt or a chestnut tree!
Enjoy (and please let us know if you want one of the retired links back on
the front page) ~
Sunday, March 25th, 2007 ~
A lazy Sunday on the driveway. Good time to check out the nests,
and the egg race. (rough year for eggs this year) And while it's
quiet out there driveway cam is going to do some spring cleaning of the
links, retire a few, move a few around, as well as try out some new ones.
Don't panic! If a link you like is missing check the retired links page.
(And if you want a link back out of retirement just let us know.) Enjoy the
Saturday, March 24th, 2007 ~
In honor of Houdini's
birthday today we are going to see if the driveway can escape the showers
that are predicted. Watch closely, you notice the driveway has nothing up
it's sleeves... Enjoy the views!
Friday, March 23rd, 2007 ~
What the temperature didn't melt the rain washed away yesterday and
our driveway snow is officially gone! We are not completely out of
snow season but thoughts turn to crocus hunting now
instead of snow plows. Have a great Friday and as always, enjoy the
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 ~
Spring is definitely in the area, and it's brought thunderstorms
with it. Enjoy watching for thunder and watching the last (?) of
the snow melt today on the driveway ~
Wednesday, March 21st, 2007 ~
Forget March Madness, driveway cam wishes a very *** Happy Birthday ***
to Lydia who is the sweetest of any Sweet Sixteen today! We all
hope it's a wonderful day for you!! as for the
rest of you in KY....it's time to get off the roads...
Tuesday, March 20th, 2007 ~
Day and night have reached a balance today, day is about to
get the upper hand but for now equilibrium is achieved
and we have a brief opportunity to ponder the symmetry......
Reset your sundials, it's Spring! (compliments of the vernal
equinox (and those lovely 23.4 degrees of tilt we have))
Monday, March 19th, 2007 ~
A long weekend of basketball madness brings us to a quiet
Monday with spring out there in the wings waiting it's cue,
and the sun hurtling towards the equator (well, I guess it's
actually the equator hurtling towards the sun isn't it?)
In any case, it's all right here for your viewing pleasure.
Sunday, March 18th, 2007 ~
Looks like a very bright Sunday out there ~ the falcons are
back in most of our favorite places and most of the sites
are back up and running. Hope you enjoy the views!
Saturday, March 17th, 2007 ~
A very Happy Birthday to Mike (who at this writing is well into
his 2nd day at the Baltimore International Airport waiting out
the storm and for his flight out which is now (hopefully still)
scheduled for 4:00PM today!) With every wish that he make it back
to Louisville in time to see Blue Man Group ~
And a Happy St. Patrick's Day
as well to everyone. Although there is more white to be seen 'round these parts than
green we hope you all have a great day! We'd wish you the luck of the Irish, but
given the game yesterday guess we'll have to say we wish you the luck of the Eagles!
Friday, March 16th, 2007 ~
Hope your brackets are holding up (quite the game between Duke and VCU) ~ storm
due in late today. You'll see it coming, right here on driveway cam. Enjoy
Thursday, March 15th, 2007 ~
Happy Ides of March! And as long as you aren't Hamlet*(oops) you don't have to beware today
too much ~
So what is an Ides? And how do you know one when you see one? It is a day in the Roman
calendar, that marked the approximate middle of the month, i.e., the fifteenth day in the
months of March, May, July, and October, and the thirteenth day in the other eight months.
The word ides comes from Latin, meaning "half division" (of a month).
* A red faced Thanks to our favorite Shakespearean who pointed out
that it was of course Julius who had to beware the Ides, Hamlet had to beware his Uncle Claudius.
Wednesday, March 14th, 2007 ~
It's Einstein's birthday and I got so caught up in pondering the energy in
my resting body that I didn't get the page here at driveway cam updated until just
about noon. Luckily driveway cam itself is much less interested in the old e=mc squared thing
and has been providing up to the (10) minute views of the driveway for you!
Enjoy the whole universe of views out there today ~
Tuesday, March 13th, 2007 ~
As the March Madness games get underway the PC has to attend it's own version of said madness
and will be at a work session today. Enjoy watching the snow melt this morning and then while
driveway cam is offline you can catch up on all your other favorite views! Enjoy ~
Monday, March 12th, 2007 ~
What surer sign that spring is coming? Robins? Nope. Daffodils? Haven't seen any.
Snow melting? More is due by the weekend. Which only leaves, of course:
THE BRACKETS ARE OUT!!! March Madness is upon us.
And if you are feeling disembodied or find yourself wanting to get on the road today
don't be surprised. Today is also Jack Kerouac's birthday
Sunday, March 11th, 2007 ~
It is perhaps most fitting that on this day of perceived and real
problems surrounding the playing with, and bending of, time that it is
the birthday of Mary Shelly's
Frankenstein published on this day
in 1818 ~AND~ the birthday of our favorite galaxy hitchhiker
Grab a towel and have a wonderful (if seemingly 1 hr shorter) Sunday!
Saturday, March 10th, 2007 ~
The day before the clocks (and perhaps the collective universe of computers everywhere) either jump back
or stop working altogether in a fit of pique! (come to think of it, they are actually going to
spring ahead, not jump back (unless things do go horribly awry))
Some things you may not know about Daylight Saving Time...
Move your mouse over (or click on) the words to find out
WHY the date is changing early this year,
WHAT the correct grammar and spelling is,

last day of not saving any daylight - enjoy the views!
Friday, March 9th, 2007 ~
The egg race is tied up at 2 all and it looks like it's going to
be a great day for watching the snow melt on the driveway! With
all that excitement you might want to limit your caffeine intake today ~
Thursday, March 8th, 2007 ~
Winter's last hurrah is still hurrahing around these parts this morning. It won't last much longer,
she says tempting fate. However, if you are tired of views of snow you can check out this
lovely view of a greenhouse full of flowers at Cornell while you are out on the links today.
Wednesday, March 7th, 2007 ~
Updates every 6 minutes this morning until the PC has to go attend
another techy work session at the condo. However the rest of the
cams will be out there all day waiting to be viewed. And try a link
for a poem published 84 years ago today. Enjoy!
Tuesday, March 6th, 2007 ~
Holy Moly it's cold!!It's also Michelangelo's birthday today ~
not sure how best to integrate those two things and it's too cold to
figure out. However, had he lived here instead of Italy perhaps
he would have sculpted in ice...........
Monday, March 5th, 2007 ~
Missed the weather reports this weekend, didn't know this was coming until
I turned on the camera this morning! The PC has to go to a work session
at the condo today so we'll speed up the updates this morning, but you'll
have to imagine what happens on the driveway from about 9:30 on... Sorry
about that. (you have no idea how much and on how many levels!) Because of
the strong gusts they are saying the Wind Chill temperature is
expected to bottom out around -25 ~ what on earth are they thinking?
Enjoy the views and stay warm!
Sunday, March 4th, 2007 ~
Hope your Sunday is going well...and hope you get some time to
stop, and watch the driveway. :)
Saturday, March 3rd, 2007 ~
It's a quiet Saturday morning here on the driveway. Several trips out and back again
are planned, and given the weather out there for so many of you the best place
you can be is inside where it's warm and safe. Pull up a chair, stay a while. And while
you are staying in and watching the world go by on the driveway and your favorite cams,
get your phone and give someone a call.
It's Alexander Graham Bell's birthday and even if the US Government now says Meucci is
officially the inventor of the telephone and even though we love the Elisha Gray
conspiracy theories ~ we here at Driveway Cam international have a soft spot in our
hearts for Bell and his rumored first telephone call consisting of "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you."
Friday, March 2nd, 2007 ~
Somehow amid all that snow yesterday out in the owl's nest in Colorado,
she managed to lay another egg! Check out the tote board link here
or from the table below ~
It is also Read Across America Day so read with a child today, get out there and explore
way on beyond zebra
and if you are wondering what to read check out the
VERY special birthday link for today!
Thursday, March 1st, 2007 ~
And without much warning it seems to be March! Reports are the daffodils are up and
gracing the landscape in North Carolina. The rest of us are in for rain
and sleet of varying amounts. Ignore the weather and ponder this (as well
as the views):
Today is the 315th anniversary of the start of the Salem Witch Trials. To
keep our viewers safe ~ from running into a witch or being found guilty of
being one (!) we offer this cautionary exhange.
And please check out this link for a look at driveway cam's
favorite owl's past couple of days....
bundle up before viewing!
Wednesday, February 28th, 2007 ~
It's Take Your Genes To Lunch Day ~ not only to celebrate
the last day of February as it rolls on down the driveway but
also in honor of the 54th Anniversary of the discovery of
the structure of the DNA molecule. So wear your DNA proudly
and get out there and strut your structure. Your DNA would probably enjoy checking out the views as well!
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007 ~
And to the owl goes the first egg of the season!!! Seems to have
happened yesterday ~
The tote board is open for business!
And here is a
link to some literary birthdays today:
It's the 200th birthday of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, born in Portland, Maine (1807).
and it's the 105th birthday of John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California (1902). Enjoy the views!
Monday, February 26th, 2007 ~
Don't know what March will do but February seems to want
to go out with a flair ~ had some snow last night, there
are rumors it will snow more today. You'll know it almost as soon
as we do if it does.
Today is the anniversary of the baptism of Christopher Marlowe
(his birth date is unknown), most famous perhaps for writing Dr.
Faustus. He was known to be in the Queen's
Secret Service, he may or may not have written plays under
the name of Shakespeare and he may or may not have been murdered
the night before he was to be arrested for atheistic ideas found in
plays written under his name. Some rumors have him being whisked
off to Italy, by the Queen, for his safety. However, he is also rumored
to have been seen frequently in Brazil in the company of some odd
german looking chaps but to date no pictures have been produced
to verify any of this....... If you see him, tell him we said
howdy!(with thanks to Writer's Digest for (most of) the information)
Sunday, February 25th, 2007 ~
The penguins are hardly ever on camera any more but the storks,
eagles and owls are doing a lovely job of taking over for them.
The falcons in Columbus can be found almost every day as well
hanging out on the ledge there.... Enjoy all the views!
and yes Cheryl, that is the new car in the driveway :)
Saturday, February 24th, 2007 ~
It's another snowy Saturday on the driveway...............
Friday, February 23rd, 2007 ~
The unassuming tho' stalwart Saturn is not long for this driveway. Got the
news yesterday and have started the hunt for a new wagon...you'll see whatever
is found in the driveway probably in the next couple of days. There is also some
snow to watch today as we slide on down the driveway into the weekend.
Happy Viewing!! (and please send in any station wagon suggestions or reviews you
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 ~
There is a special birthday link today ~ which we hope you will
add to your list of links to hop when not viewing the driveway as it perhaps fills again with snow. Have
a perfectly curious day......
Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 ~
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO AUNT JOYCE today!!
We all wish for you a wonderful year ahead!!!
Tuesday, February 20th, 2007 ~
Happy Mardi Gras!!! Fat Tuesday is here and driveway cam is ready to show
you all the action as it parades on down the driveway and elsewhere on the
planet. You can also check out here how
New Orleans is celebrating . Enjoy and pancakes all around! :)
Monday, February 19th, 2007 ~
They're back ~
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 ~
Hope Louisville enjoyed their snow yesterday, and that
any of our viewers who got snow enjoyed it. Also hope
you are all staying warm.
Both storks in nest 1 are now back (the 2nd one came
back yesterday!), there are storks in nest 2, the eagle
in Colorado is around more and the owl there was back too
although not seen in a few days ~ but as the penguins
spend less time on camera the other nests are gearing up!
(It's great that they coordinate this so well for us)
If it's too cold to go out, get some hot chocolate
and go nest hopping from the driveway ~
Saturday, February 17th, 2007 ~
And without even trying ~ it's Saturday on the driveway!
Have a great weekend and enjoy the views.
Friday, February 16th, 2007 ~
The PC is back (got back yesterday afternoon) and is so
happy to help present to you.....Friday on the driveway.
(in conjunction with Driveway Cam Productions, a division
of Beatrice)(aren't we all?) Happy Viewing!
Thursday, February 15th, 2007 ~
Officially Rochester got 21 inches of snow yesterday....
we didn't get that much out here in the burbs sadly,
but from all the blowing around we have lovely drifts
to simulate having gotten 21 inches of snow. Here is
a link to 3 live cams on Monroe Ave in town,
it's the street Em works on - just a few blocks up from
where the cameras point so you can watch what she's walking around in
while the PC goes off to it's last day of meetings
(insert loud YAY here)
Wednesday, February 14th, 2007 ~
Happy Valentines Day! Rumor has it we are going to have
between 15-25 inches of snow by mid day today.......sorry
to say our meeting will not be called because of the weather
so the PC will be out in the elements today instead of
showing you the snow fall. As many updates as will fit
before I leave today. Let's be careful out there people -
watch the roads!
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 ~
And just as the weather is getting interesting to watch....the PC
has to go to a 3 day meeting. Updates of the driveway as possible,
and your other favorite driveway cam links are out there waiting
for you. Drive carefully in the mess that is on it's way!
Monday, February 12th, 2007 ~
As we all wander off to buy furniture to celebrate Lincoln's birthday, let's
be careful out there ~ some interesting weather headed towards, well,
towards just about all of our viewers! If not in your area you can catch
the action on the links ~ enjoy the views.
Sunday, February 11th, 2007 ~
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Jessie!!! Hope it's a wonderful day for you!
Saturday, February 10th, 2007 ~
We made it....it's the weekend! Today is the birthday of
Boris Pasternak , so you may want to break out your copy of Dr. Zhivago and dive in. Additionally, there
will be 2 minutes more daylight today than there was yesterday, which means you'll have plenty of time
for viewing and reading! To celebrate the extra minutes for you dedicated weekend viewers ~ updates
will be 2 minutes closer together...so the action unfolds every 8 minutes! Pace yourselves.
Friday, February 9th, 2007 ~
Driveway Cam is not in the "persistent" lake effect areas that currently have
over 8 feet of snow on the ground, but there are flurries flurrying about today
and through the weekend. Hope you enjoy watching them ~
Thursday, February 8th, 2007 ~
Thursday already? Seems like just yesterday that it was Wednesday. Enjoy the views ~
Wednesday, February 7th, 2007 ~
It's a lovely Wednesday on the driveway as well as off of it. Be sure to take
some time today to enjoy the views.
Monday, February 5th, 2007 ~
Still cold and windy up here. Enjoy watching the snow drift
across the driveway. (and the multiple attempts it takes to
get cars up the driveway.......)
Sunday, February 4th, 2007 ~
It's too cold for playing outside, but it's never too cold to
play the links from inside ~ get some hot chocolate, warm socks
and a blanket; then ignore the weather and enjoy the views.....
(here is what we are ignoring 'round these parts:)
Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 ~

it to PA either (one of these days, we can all car pool) you can at least join in
the festivites with some
Groundhogs Day Carols!! (click this link, you know you want to) ~ as well as
some wandering of various Groundhogs Day links....click here,
here. Enjoy and here is to hoping for 6 more weeks of winter.

this morning. Hope your February is off to a slightly more organized start than ours
seems to be here at Driveway Cam. Stay warm and enjoy the views ~
Wednesday, January 31st, 2007 ~
Here for your viewing pleasure ~ our friend Ann's birthday and the last day of January, as it rolls on down the driveway,
down the Washington monument, down Pikes Peak, down an island in Antarctica, off the backs of some
elephant seals and echoes around the Grand Canyon (or anywhere else you want to watch it parade by!)
Enjoy the views ~
Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 ~
A sort of a library day today.....It was on this day in 1815 that
the U.S. Congress accepted Thomas Jefferson's offer to rebuild the
Library of Congress, which British troops had burned along with
much of DC the previous year, with more than 6,000 books from his
own library. At that time, Thomas Jefferson owned the largest private
collection of books in the United States. Some of the books that
belonged to Thomas Jefferson were destroyed in a fire in 1851, but
many still remain in the library. When the first Muslim member of
Congress, Rep. Keith Ellison, was sworn in a few weeks ago, he took
the oath of office by laying his hand on a copy of the Quran that
had originally belonged to Jefferson.
And it is the birthday of Franklin Roosevelt. He was the first president
to set up a presidential library, in part because he was a lifelong collector,
and he didn't want to break his collection up. The Franklin D. Roosevelt
Library would eventually contain more than 16 million pages of personal
and official papers, more than 45 tons of documents. (With thanks to Writer's
Almanac for the information.) If you have time today to take a break from
watching the links perhaps a visit to a library is in order...........
Monday, January 29th, 2007 ~
A very happy Monday to everyone - there is snow in the driveway,
and snow in the forecast! The perfect combination. Today is
also the birthday of Thomas Paine and Edward Abbey, both of whom
helped revolutions along with their writing. To celebrate
their birthdays we should all use a little
Common Sense today and mind the environment!
A couple of quotations before you hit the links:
Thomas Paine ~ "He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even
his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a
precedent that will reach to himself."
"Reason has seldom failed us because it has seldom been tried" ~ Edward Abbey
Sunday, January 28th, 2007 ~
A few new links down in the table below as a few old links are retired...

filled up with snow! (finally!!). Camera and PC will be reunited this afternoon

a couple of quick shots posted this morning before I leave. In the mean time,
imagine C O L D and blowing S N O W ~ or check out the Rochester Weather cameras

in a river bed in California ~ in honor of that Driveway Cam hopes you find a nugget
or two of something that catches your eye while viewing today. Happy

you! Enjoy the views, driveway pictures whenever possible this week ~
Sunday, January 21st, 2007 ~

love for it to come and visit? Thanks and enjoy the views ~
Saturday, January 20th, 2007 ~
Been having some on again off again technical issues with Driveway Cam, but
it should be ON again, and just in time for some weekend snow
watching. Also a few new cams for your patience ~ in the table

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007 ~
As the cold settles in, and winter returns (in a rather bad mood for a lot of states),
driveway cam hopes all of our viewers continue to have electricity to run your furnaces
and your computers! And speaking of staying warm....hat's off to Benjamin Franklin on his birthday
today. Franklin invented a safer, heat-efficient stove — called the Franklin stove — which he never
patented because he created it for the good of society. (thanks to writer's almanac).
Tuesday, January 16th, 2007 ~
Looking forward to some of the
peace and quiet snow can bring. Enjoy the views ~
Monday, January 15th, 2007 ~
Hope you are having an ice free Martin Luther King Jr. Day
where ever you are ~ it's rain and ice on and off here.....

Here it is already the 2nd Thursday of the New Year! The penguins are
growing almost as fast as the time is skating by and Mei Lan is, rumor has
it, quite mobile these days down in Atlanta. (although she is sleeping every
time I go take a peek). If anyone saw the comet last night please let us
know - we were clouded out here. Enjoy the views!
Wednesday, January 10th, 2007 ~
It's only an inch or so and it's only going to be here for a day,
